I've only done this ̶h̶u̶n̶d̶r̶e̶d̶s̶ thousands of times. Maybe you want a bassline but have no idea which synth to use. There is no right answer, but I can send you some choices to pick from.

Maybe you need some dirt added to your sound? Some saturation. Some inaccuracies. Some punch and distortion that you can only get from lusty hardware pieces. Perhaps you need a track "louder". Or maybe you're not sure what you need, but you think hardware and someone else's ears could improve your work.

Does hardware really matter?
If it inspires you to make something that you otherwise would not, then YES! Sometimes running things out of the computer and into circuitry makes them sound dirtier (because of added noise), different (turning knobs to get there), "bigger" because of transformers, A/D and D/A converinaudible distortions and clipping.
